There is a terrific resource right in the south suburbs. The South Suburban Genealogical and Historical society started in the 1970s when like-minded people got together and shared their interest and expertise with each other. The society has grown to nearly 200 members nationwide and a sizeable collection of resources devoted to the south side of Chicago and the south suburbs.

In addition, we have resources for all areas, beyond our immediate area. We have a library in Hazel Crest to serve the needs of researchers. The SSGHS houses some unique collections such as the employee records of the Pullman Car Works that was located in Pullman, Illinois. We also have cemetery readings, church histories, yearbooks, and other hard-to-find items.

Patty Higgins, a retired reference librarian and volunteer at SSGHS, will introduce you to this gem located right here in the south suburbs.

This group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 pm. Learn about using different online databases, breaking through “brick walls,” obtaining vital records, and documenting and organizing your family research. Come share your family research success stories and continue to increase the “branches” on your family tree!
